Nearly two thousand years ago, a Greek physician noticed that his patients suffered from a peculiar ailment no drug could touch. They were sick with certainty. This book restores that lost cure to the modern reader. Sextus was the last and greatest of the ancient skeptics, the man who gave doubt its finished form and then, astonishingly, turned it upon itself. He argued that for every confident claim there stands an equally confident rival, that our proofs lean on assumptions which lean on other proofs, and that the honest response to this endless leaning is not despair but a quiet, deliberate pause. From that pause, he promised, a surprising peace arrives on its own.

The closing chapters carry his insight into the present, where the skeptic's suspended judgment reappears as the natural posture of any observer working with limited information, and where his famous tranquility looks less like resignation than like a mind finally in coherence with itself. Sextus buried his cure in plain sight, and it waited fifteen centuries to be read again. Here it is, still working.
