He was the first overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. He signed a $130 million contract in 2004, the largest in NFL history at the time. He was the most electrifying player in professional football - a quarterback who could throw 60 yards or outrun linebackers.
From approximately 2002 to 2007, while playing at the highest level of professional football, Michael Vick was running an interstate dogfighting operation on 15 acres he owned in Surry County, Virginia.
Bad Newz Kennels trained pit bulls. It hosted fights with gambling purses up to $26,000. It killed dogs that didn't perform well by methods including hanging, drowning, electrocution, and shooting.
In April 2007, law enforcement raided the property and found 54 pit bulls and the infrastructure of a professional dogfighting operation. In July 2007, a federal grand jury indicted Vick and three co-conspirators. His co-defendants pleaded guilty and testified that Vick had bankrolled the operation, participated in training and fighting decisions, and agreed to the killing of underperforming dogs.
On August 27, 2007, Michael Vick pleaded guilty. On December 10, 2007, U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson sentenced him to 23 months - above the guideline range of 12 to 18 months, because the judge found he had not been fully honest about his role in killing dogs. He had also failed a drug test taken after his guilty plea. He filed for bankruptcy from prison in 2008.
The Dogfighter tells the complete story:
Newport News - Growing up in the projects. His father holding him up toward the night sky at birth. The escape through football: Warwick High, Virginia Tech, the first overall pick. The promise to buy his mother a home. The specific durability of the social world he came from, which traveled with him even as his circumstances transformed.
Bad Newz Kennels - How it operated. The fighting pit. The interstate commerce. The co-conspirators from his Newport News world who ran the operation with his NFL money. The training equipment. The specific culture of organized dogfighting in the communities where it exists. And what they did to the dogs.
The Investigation - The drug case involving a relative that led law enforcement to the Surry County property. The April and June raids. The federal indictment. The co-conspirators flipping one by one. Vick's initial not-guilty plea, his failed drug test, and his August 2007 guilty plea.
The Fall - 23 months at Leavenworth. Bankruptcy. The Falcons seeking $19.97 million of his bonus back. Nike terminating his deal and removing his merchandise from the website. The $130 million contract, gone.
The Return - The Eagles signed him to a $1.6 million contract in August 2009. In 2010, he had one of the best quarterback seasons in NFL history. He won the Comeback Player of the Year award.
The question the book addresses honestly: what does it mean that Michael Vick came back? The legal system, the NFL, and the sports public each answered that question differently. The dogs at Bad Newz Kennels did not return.
