This third volume completes a sweeping journey through southern Florida, moving from barrier islands and thriving coastal cities to ghost towns, cattle country, and some of the most fragile ecosystems in North America.
The routes follow the Gulf Coast and the interior of the peninsula: from the celebrated beaches of Siesta Key to the quiet wilderness of Myakka River State Park; from expanding suburban corridors to the last vast wetlands that still define the Everglades region. Along the way, the journey crosses ranchlands, abandoned settlements, forgotten rail stops, Seminole and Miccosukee territories, and places where Florida's frontier endured far longer than most people imagine.
History unfolds directly through the terrain. The book explores Spanish exploration, Indigenous cultures, the Seminole Wars, Civil War-era encounters, and railroad towns that once flourished before disappearing from the map. It also reflects on Florida's own Wild West, the environmental consequences of development, and the tension between preservation and growth that continues to shape the peninsula.
