In Discovering Florida - Volume III, Jefferson Aleman continues his long-distance bicycle journey across the Sunshine State, uncovering regions where nature, history, and human ambition collide. This third volume completes a cycle of exploration that moves from barrier islands and coastal cities to ghost towns, ranchlands, and some of the most fragile ecosystems in North America.
Across these final routes, the journey follows the Gulf Coast and the deep interior of southern Florida: from award-winning beaches like Siesta Key to the vast silence of Myakka River State Park; from overbuilt suburban corridors to the last remnants of untamed wetlands in Collier and Charlotte counties. The book traverses cattle ranches, abandoned county seats, failed real-estate empires, Seminole and Miccosukee lands, and places where the frontier survived well into the twentieth century.
History is woven directly into the landscape. These pages explore Spanish exploration and Indigenous cultures, the Seminole Wars, Civil War skirmishes, railroad towns that vanished, Florida's own Wild West, and the environmental cost of relentless development. Along the way, the reader encounters forts long erased from maps, the smallest post office in the United States, legendary figures such as Juan Ponce de León, and enduring myths like the Skunk Ape of the Everglades.
More than a cycling guide, Discovering Florida - Volume III is a narrative atlas of place and memory.
