In Deliberative Democracy: Replacing Liberal Democracy in
Postcolonial African States, Professor George M. Carew offers a
powerful critique of liberal democracy as applied to Africa
and other postcolonial societies. Drawing on decades of
experience as a philosopher, diplomat, and public servant, he
argues that persistent governance failures stem from inherited
institutions that ignore cultural diversity and social realities.
Carew advances deliberative democracy as a participatory,
bottom-up alternative grounded in dialogue, inclusion, and
social cohesion. Rejecting abstract, culture-free models of the
individual, this second edition calls for democratic systems rooted in
lived social experience. An original and timely contribution, this
book is essential reading for scholars, policymakers, and
advocates of democratic reform.
Professor Emeritus George M. Carew is a distinguished scholar,
diplomat, and educator. He served as the first Vice Chancellor of the
United Methodist University in Sierra Leone and earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy
from the University of Connecticut, USA, in 1975. Over the course of his
career, Professor Carew held several high-ranking public service roles,
including Ambassador to the United States, Deputy High Commissioner
to the United Kingdom, and Minister of Agriculture in Sierra Leone. In
academia, he was formerly Head of the Department of Philosophy and Classics at
Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. He has also taught at numerous
universities in the United States, including the University of Connecticut and the
University of Iowa. Professor Carew is the author of several influential works
in political philosophy, including Democratic Transition in Post-Colonial
Africa: A Deliberative Approach (Mellen Press, 2006), and Reflections
on Philosophy, Politics, and Post-Colonial African Society (Sierra Leonean
Writers Series, 2022), along with numerous scholarly articles.
