She's lied. She's stolen. She's killed a man in cold blood. She's only 17.
But against all odds, Tess Willoughby is still alive, and fighting with every breath to stay that way.
She used to do needlepoint and wear pretty dresses with petticoats.
She used to have a privileged life in London until her impetuous temperament got her into trouble and she was sent to the pirate-infested West Indies, a place full of ancient superstitions that continually challenge her empirical beliefs.
But when a fall from a ledge deep inside a dark cavern separates Tess from her first-ever love, William, she becomes a captive of a savage pirate crew, half of whom want to sell her to a brothel, while the other half, in order to appease the gods of the seas, want to sacrifice her as a sea witch.
She'll have to harness every bit of her courage and head-strong determination to come up with and carry out, a plot to stay alive, but she'll need a miracle, and she thinks she may have just found one.
In her efforts to survive, she's stumbled upon three out of five of the area's legendary Spinner rings and thinks that maybe, just maybe, she's accidentally learned how to harness their frightening powers.
But even as a captive, she's being hunted.
Two psychotic killers, each of whom has one of the remaining two rings.
Both know what the real power of the set of five is.
Both intend to acquire hers from her in any way necessary.
And how hard could that be if either of them was to turn her into a corpse before the dreaded pirates get their chance?
