Point-of-care ultrasound is not radiology performed at the bedside. It is a distinct discipline, one that begins with a clinical question and acquires only the images needed to answer it. Comprehensive Point-of-Care Ultrasound provides a systematic account of that discipline for clinicians in emergency medicine, critical care, and hospital medicine who scan where decisions are made.
The book is comprehensive in scope and systematic in method, covering the field from the physics of the image through the building of a credentialed program, while keeping every window and measurement tied to a bedside decision. It is structured to be read as a course or opened to a single presentation at the moment a patient is in front of you.
Part I, Foundations:
- What POCUS is and is not
- Physics for the bedside clinician
- Transducers and the handheld era
- Machine operation, orientation, and probe handling
- Artifacts, recognizing them and using them
Part II, Core Sonoanatomy:
- Thoracic windows and normal lung, interstitial and alveolar patterns, pleural effusion and pneumothorax, and diaphragm assessment
- Cardiac windows and focused valvular assessment, left and right ventricular function, pericardial space and tamponade physiology, and the inferior vena cava
- Abdominal, renal, bladder, biliary, and aortic sonoanatomy
- Scrotal and first-trimester-through-term obstetric ultrasound
Part III, Scanning by Clinical Question, organized by presentation rather than organ:
- The undifferentiated hypotensive patient
- Acute dyspnea and chest pain
- Trauma, with FAST and eFAST
- Cardiac arrest and the peri-arrest state
- Abdominal pain, pelvic pain, and early pregnancy emergencies
- Suspected venous thromboembolism

The book assumes a reader who wants to answer a clinical question rather than admire an image. Each clinical-question chapter moves from the presentation a clinician is facing to the sequence of images that addresses it, so the scan follows the reasoning and not the anatomy alone, whether in the emergency department, the intensive care unit, or on the ward.
Point-of-care ultrasound is a skill developed at the bedside, under supervision, and within the limits of a clinician's training, scope of practice, and institutional credentialing. This book is a framework for that learning and a reference for practice conducted after it, not a substitute for supervised training.
