In 1983 a US Army intelligence analyst sat down to evaluate one of the most extraordinary claims in the history of human experience - that the mind can leave the body, transcend the boundaries of space and time, and access information beyond the reach of ordinary perception. His conclusion, contained in a classified CIA document that would remain hidden for decades, was not dismissal. His conclusion was that the physics supported it, that the theoretical framework was sound, and that the programme warranted the most serious attention the intelligence community could bring to bear.
That document is the CIA's Analysis and Assessment of the Gateway Process, written by Lieutenant Colonel Wayne M. McDonnell and classified for years before being quietly released through the Freedom of Information Act. When it resurfaced online it caused a sensation - not because it was sensational, but because it was so utterly serious. Here was a senior military analyst, writing for the Director of the CIA, calmly working through holographic universe theory, quantum physics, and the neurological mechanics of altered states of consciousness, in order to evaluate whether human beings could genuinely achieve what the Monroe Institute claimed its Gateway Experience programme could produce.
This volume brings together for the first time the complete collection of declassified Gateway Project materials. The CIA assessment is presented alongside the Monroe Institute's own Gateway Experience introductory and intermediate workbooks - the actual training documents used to guide participants through the Hemi-Sync process and into the expanded states of consciousness that the CIA found so compelling.
Robert Monroe was one of the most remarkable figures of the twentieth century. A successful businessman and broadcasting executive, he began experiencing spontaneous out-of-body states in the late 1950s and spent the rest of his life investigating them with a rigour and systematic discipline that put many academic researchers to shame. The Hemi-Sync technology he developed - based on the well-documented neurological response to binaural beat frequencies - became the foundation of the Gateway Experience: a structured programme of consciousness expansion that has been used by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and that attracted the attention of the United States Army and the Central Intelligence Agency.
Together these three documents tell a story that mainstream culture has never fully confronted. They tell the story of a government that privately investigated the furthest frontiers of human consciousness while publicly dismissing such investigations as pseudoscience.
