The immunology and serology rotation asks students to do something that no other laboratory discipline quite demands in the same way. It asks them to look at a pattern of results, understand what the immune system is doing, and translate that into a report that means something to a clinician. That translation step is where most of the difficulty lives, and it is where most textbooks leave a gap.
Clinical Immunology and Serology in Practice closes that gap by pairing immunological theory with the practical bench reasoning that results interpretation actually requires. The book does not separate what the immune system does from how a laboratory measures it. Those two things are taught together, chapter by chapter, because understanding one without the other leaves a student prepared for a textbook examination but uncertain at an actual instrument.
The 25 chapters of this book cover the full scope of the discipline. The opening section works through the biology of the immune system, including innate and adaptive immunity, antigen recognition and the major histocompatibility complex, antibody structure and function, cytokines, and the complement system. These chapters establish the mechanistic foundation that makes everything in the methods and diagnostic sections interpretable rather than memorized.
The methods section addresses the full range of procedures on the modern serology bench. Precipitation and agglutination reactions, enzyme immunoassays, chemiluminescent and microparticle immunoassays, immunofluorescence, molecular techniques including PCR and next-generation sequencing, flow cytometry, multiplex bead-based panels, and laboratory automation each receive dedicated treatment, including specimen requirements, assay principles, quality control, and the sources of error specific to each method.
The diagnostic chapters cover the immune-mediated diseases and infections that serologic testing is used to characterize. Hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, immunoproliferative disease, immunodeficiency, transplantation immunology, and tumor immunology are addressed alongside infectious disease serology for bacterial, spirochete, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections. The HIV and syphilis chapters reflect current testing algorithms, including the reverse-sequence syphilis algorithm and the updated HIV diagnostic algorithm that replaced earlier protocols.
Throughout the diagnostic chapters, Result Interpretation panels show how to read patterns of results across multiple analytes. Troubleshooting and Sources of Error sections identify the interferences most likely to produce misleading or unexpected results. Reflex Testing sections present the decision logic that determines what the laboratory does next when an initial result is reactive, equivocal, or internally discordant.
The content of this book maps directly to the ASCP Board of Certification content outline for both the MLS and MLT immunology subtests. High-yield examination material is flagged at the point of instruction and consolidated in a dedicated review appendix at the back of the book.
