China at the beginning of the 20th century was a country caught between revolution, civil war, foreign pressure and the struggle for a new political order. After the fall of the German Empire in 1911, the young republic did not succeed in creating lasting stability. Warlords controlled entire regions, political alliances shifted, foreign powers secured their interests, and new movements fought to determine China's future.
The Chinese Civil War before 1937 tells the story and the first major phase of the conflict between nationalists and communists. The focus is on Sun Yat sen, Chiang Kai shek, Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhang Xueliang and numerous other actors whose decisions changed China permanently.
The book traces the path from the revolution of 1911 to the rule of Yuan Shikai and the era of the warlords to the emergence of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. It explains the First United Front, the establishment of the Whampoa Military Academy, the Northern Campaign, the bloody break between nationalists and communists in 1927, and the subsequent communist uprisings and the establishment of rural Soviet territories.
The emergence of the Nanjing government, the war of the central plain, the encirclement campaigns against the communists and the Long March are also described in detail. At the same time, the increasing threat from Japan is coming into focus. The occupation of Manchuria, Chiang's difficult choice between internal consolidation and resistance to Japan, and the Xi'an Incident of 1936 finally led to a temporary rapprochement between the hostile camps.
It is not only about what happened, but above all about why those involved acted in this way. Why did nationalists and communists initially ally with each other? Why did this alliance break up so violently? Why was the Communist Party able to survive despite the heaviest defeats? Why did Chiang Kaishek continue the fight against the communists for a long time, even though Japan was threatening ever larger parts of China? And how did Mao Zedong succeed in increasingly shaping an independent political and military power out of a weakened revolutionary movement?
