Alan has always dreamed of helping his mother and making her proud. So, when this nine-year-old boy is given the opportunity to work as a chimney sweep in Victorian Edinburgh, he believes that his life is finally about to change for the better. However, climbing through dark and narrow chimneys is far more dangerous than he could ever have imagined. Together with a group of other children, some of whom are only three years old, Alan discovers a hidden world of friendship, sacrifice, and heartbreaking secrets that most adults refuse to see. While the townspeople regard chimney sweeps as symbols of good luck, the children know the truth. Every day brings new dangers, difficult choices, and the fear that one of their friends may never return home. As Christmas approaches and Parliament debates a law that could change the fate of thousands of children, Alan dreams more and more of a day when no child will ever again have to crawl through dark chimneys. Before an unexpected Christmas miracle changes everything, Alan must face a tragedy his young heart never imagined possible.
