《庄子传》无一事无来历，都有史料依据。主要来源是所有先秦著作，以及后世整理的与庄子时代相关的各种著作，比如刘向编纂的《说苑》、《新序》、《战国策》，大概上百本。
梳理的方法是先厘正《史记》的错讹战国纪年，不限于战国七雄，而是旁及庄子母邦宋国、《庄子》初始本的编纂者魏牟的母邦魏属中山，以及战国时代仍存而《史记》、《辞海》均不列入的鲁、卫、郑、越等所有重要诸侯国。纪年既正，所有原先不能到位的零散史料都能精确到位。每件重要史事既明，相关重要人物的生平也能精确到位。于是秦火汉黜以后无限淆乱的战国史，也就有了清晰立体的因果逻辑。当然这事说来容易做来难，所以我花费了半生精力。
