This book tells that story differently. Rather than another chronological catalogue of conquests, this book follows the specific human beings who built Jerusalem's meaning, layer by layer, across four millennia. The Palestinian merchant woman whose letters about flax prices simply stop in 1099, her silence the most honest testimony to what the Crusader conquest actually cost. The Ottoman sultan who built the walls that still stand today and never once visited the city he defined forever. The Spanish nun who walked these streets in 381 CE and wrote home to describe a city that had turned its entire geography into a prayer. Through ten chapters spanning the Jebusite settlers of the Bronze Age to the present contested city, the book pursues a single argument: Jerusalem's sanctity was never simply discovered. It was made, deliberately and repeatedly, by rulers, priests, and pilgrims who understood that a city on a ridge with no river needed something more than geography to justify the wars fought in its name. Written in the tradition of history that respects both the evidence and the reader, A Brief History of Jerusalem is rigorous about what we know, honest about what we do not, and relentless in its pursuit of the human beings behind the battles.
