In 1947, the Allied powers abolished Prussia by legal decree. A state that had shaped European civilization for seven centuries simply ceased to exist.

This is the story of how a poor, sand-blown territory on the Baltic coast, governed first by crusading monks and then by a dynasty of increasingly ambitious kings, became the engine of German unification, the birthplace of modern bureaucracy, the home of Immanuel Kant, and the military culture that fed two world wars. The same ruling class that resisted democracy for generations also produced the reformers who rebuilt a shattered army after Napoleon humiliated it in a single afternoon, and the officers who attempted to assassinate Hitler in 1944 at the cost of their lives.
