Alien, soldier, brother, god...Tuyouk has many identities and bears the weight of many expectations. Disguised as a primitive human warrior, he is on a mission to protect his people's half-human descendants in a wilderness dimension near Earth. The only job he wants, however, is to be the husband of Ayana, a magical shaman from an estranged clan. Unfortunately, his frequent deceptions have driven Ayana away, and she no longer wants anything to do with him. He still has the companionship of his half-brother, Danny, but when Danny goes to the city to save a young friend, Ayana goes with him, sending Tuyouk into a spate of irrational jealousy. He tells himself that he cannot stand idly by while the two people he loves the most go into the witches' city to attempt a potentially dangerous rescue, so he volunteers to go with them whether they want him to or not. The problem is that the ruler of the witches' city is Tuyouk's ex-lover Belall, who has been nurturing a virulent hatred of him for three centuries. Belall remembers him as an eight-foot tall, armored warrior, so he feels somewhat protected in the body of his current incarnation. Conversely, Ayana doesn't know what his true self looks like, and he doesn't want her to know. His biggest fear is that Belall will somehow expose the fact that he has lied to her, yet again, and that he is, in fact, the being Ayana worships as the Black God.
