He told them help was coming.
It wasn't.
During a nighttime ambush in Afghanistan, Sergeant Raul Medrano and several Soldiers are cut off and pinned down by gunfire and RPGs. Their ammunition is running low, aircraft support is unavailable, and the artillery they need has been denied.
With the men around him looking for an answer, Medrano gives them the only thing he has left:
The birds are coming!
The aircraft never arrive.
Instead, an unexpected artillery illumination round bursts above the battlefield, filling the darkness with light and helping the platoon find a way out.
They make it home, but the questions come with them.
Years later, after leaving the Army and returning to the faith of his childhood, Medrano begins to look at that night differently. His family's faith, his military service, and the story of Saint Barbara help reveal connections he never recognized before.
The Birds Are Coming: A Soldier's Story of War, Intercession, and Mercy is a true story of combat, brotherhood, guilt, survival, and faith, centered on an experience that took years to understand. It bears witness to the battles fought overseas, the ones carried home, and the faith that can remain even when the help we expect never comes.
