In 2021, the Taliban swept back across Afghanistan. Logar fell. Kabul fell. The government collapsed. Places that had once belonged to another part of life were suddenly back in the news for very different reasons.
By then, the uniform was gone. The Army had moved on. Life had moved on.
But Afghanistan had not.
The Ending We Thought We Had is about what happens when history changes something you thought was already settled. It is about leaving a war, becoming a civilian, and then watching from thousands of miles away as the country you once served in returns to the hands of the Taliban.
The war was over for the Soldier who came home. The larger story was not.
And when that ending finally came, it raised a question that was much harder to leave in the past:
