What does effective treatment look like? When is residential care appropriate? What happens when substance use returns after treatment? And perhaps most importantly, how can adults protect a young person without allowing fear to become the only thing guiding their response?
At the heart of the book is the Beyond the Substance Framework: SEE → UNDERSTAND → RESPOND → RECONNECT, a practical approach that helps families and professionals move from fear and reaction toward clarity and informed action.
Readers will learn how to recognize different levels of substance-use risk, understand what a substance may be doing for an adolescent, navigate treatment and levels of care, evaluate the quality of services, respond to relapse and recurrence, strengthen family recovery, and help young people build lives in which substances no longer have to occupy such an important place.
Beyond the Substance does not minimize the danger of adolescent substance use, nor does it reduce every young person to addiction, trauma, bad friends, or poor choices. Instead, it asks adults to become accurate enough to see what is actually happening and informed enough to respond to the adolescent who is actually in front of them.
