Janus, (a high school friend) who worked during summers in the coal mines at an early age and has a history of working with large mechanical beasts; is a lonely soldier working in the motor pool and teaching others how to drive huge tank-hauling tractor-trailer rigs -- has provided shelter and safety in a rustic cottage he is renting - but he will not be staying back east after a short visit with his parents - his part-time job off-base has led to a full-time offer with college tuition benefits after his discharge in August. His army duties and workplace friends also add color and excitement to their summer.
