As Luck Would Have It... captures the trio of luck, serendipity, and happenstance as occurring over the centuries to this day. Early in the text, the nature/nurture dichotomy provides the overlay for genetics, reproduction, mental and physical disorders, and their frequencies in ethnic, racial, and demographic groups. The chapters concerning the discoveries in medicine and psychiatry are especially illuminating and elevate serendipity to prominence.
On a lighter note, the culture of show business is exposed, as perhaps nowhere is luck more contributory and pervasive. Later, beliefs, values, and attitudes take center stage and provide the backdrop for superstitious thinking and behavior.
