Antiques by Sarah M. Lockwood is an insightful and practical guide to the world of early American furniture and decorative arts. Written during a pivotal era of renewed interest in colonial craftsmanship, the work serves as a comprehensive primer for both novice collectors and seasoned enthusiasts. Lockwood explores the evolution of various styles-from the sturdy utility of the Pilgrim era to the refined elegance of the Chippendale and Sheraton periods-providing readers with the essential knowledge needed to identify and appreciate genuine historical pieces.
The text delves into the defining characteristics of different furniture types, including chairs, tables, chests, and sideboards, while also touching upon the significance of materials and construction techniques. Beyond mere identification, Lockwood imbues the work with a sense of the historical context and social history behind these objects, illustrating how they reflected the lives and values of early Americans. With its clear prose and foundational expertise, Antiques remains a valuable resource for anyone interested in the enduring beauty of traditional craftsmanship and the art of building a meaningful collection of Americana.
