The Pine Furniture of Early New England is a comprehensive study of the functional beauty and craftsmanship inherent in the domestic furnishings of early American settlers. Focusing on the distinctive characteristics of white pine, Russell Hawes Kettell explores how this versatile material was shaped into the essential items of the colonial home, from sturdy chests and cupboards to elegant tables and chairs.
The work serves as an invaluable resource for collectors, woodworkers, and historians interested in the aesthetic and structural development of American furniture during the 17th and 18th centuries. Through detailed analysis, Kettell examines the construction techniques, regional variations, and utilitarian designs that defined New England's material culture. The book captures the transition from primitive necessity to refined artistry, showcasing the ingenuity of early craftsmen who worked with limited resources to create lasting pieces of heritage.
By documenting specific examples and their historical contexts, The Pine Furniture of Early New England provides a deep understanding of the styles that shaped the American home and remains a cornerstone text for anyone passionate about antique furniture and traditional woodworking.
