The most famous comparison ever written is one that nobody alive has read. Plutarch built his Parallel Lives around matched pairs, a Greek against a Roman, and meant each pair to end with the chapter where the storyteller becomes a judge. For his greatest pair, Alexander and Caesar, that chapter is lost. The weighing happened. The verdict is missing.
This book does not retell the two lives. It sets them side by side and weighs them, the way Plutarch built the pair to be read, through four questions: what each man was handed and what he built for himself, how each used power over people who could not fight back, the story each told the world about himself, and what actually survived him. There is no easy winner. Your child learns to weigh the evidence on both sides and reach a verdict of their own, because the one Plutarch would have written is gone.
Threaded through every question is the part most history for kids skips: how do we even know? Your child learns to read Plutarch as a writer with a purpose and not a camera, to hold his account against Caesar's own war commentaries, and to notice the gaps that follow. They find out that Caesar's own book somehow never mentions the most famous moment of his life, and that Et tu, Brute? belongs to Shakespeare, not to history.
A note on who this is for. It is written for a ten- to fourteen-year-old to read on their own. But it is also the fastest way for a parent to get ready to teach or discuss Plutarch. In an afternoon it gives you the primer: what his lives of Alexander and Caesar actually cover, the four questions the comparison turns on, and where the evidence leans, so you can lead the conversation instead of bluffing it. For this pair, even Plutarch left the verdict open, so the book hands you the weighing, labeled as ours, not a conclusion the source never wrote.
This is the last rung of the series. The toddler book plants the two stories, the picture book runs the lives side by side, the chapter book tells both in full and weighs them. The prep book walks the final mile, so that when your child opens the real Parallel Lives, at fourteen or at forty, they arrive already knowing how to read it: lives, not histories, small moments over loud events, and a standing suspicion of any verdict that comes out too clean.
A note for parents. The source material is adult and the book does not hide it: an assassination, a friend killed in a drunken rage, a city destroyed and its people enslaved, old servants put to death on suspicion, and a proud enemy's suicide, all named plainly and never gruesomely. The honesty is the point, and it is the same honesty the book demands of its sources.
Ages 10 to 14 - about 9,000 words - six parts: an opening on how to read Plutarch, four weighings, and a verdict left to the reader - 16 black-and-white woodcut illustrations - independent reading.
