Nineteen hundred years ago, a Greek writer named Plutarch took one famous Greek and one famous Roman, set their lives side by side, and asked what each one revealed about the other. He called it comparison, and of all his pairs he placed these two founders first, right at the front of his great book, because founding a city is where everything else begins. This book hands a six- to ten-year-old that exact way of thinking: not just what happened, but what to make of it.
Your child learns to read a life the way Plutarch did. To watch the small moments, a choice, a broken promise, the way someone treats a friend, instead of only counting up the monsters and the walls. And to ask the hardest question in either story: when someone builds something great, what does it cost the people closest to them, and does greatness ever excuse the wrong?
The proof is two of the best stories ever told. A boy lifts a rock to learn he is a prince, then clears a road of monsters by turning each cruel man's own trap back on him. A princess hands him the thread that saves his life, and he sails away and leaves her alone on a beach. Two babies who should have drowned are saved by a wolf, and a new city's first wall goes up with the founder's own twin lying dead beside it. Women carried off by force walk between two armies and turn a crime into a lasting peace. And underneath every legend runs the question a real historian asks: how do we even know? Plutarch promised to let Fable submit to Reason, and your child learns to read these old stories the same way.
What this version does: it tells both founders in full, including the falls the younger books leave out, and then it does the thing other versions skip. It weighs the two lives against each other and lands the lesson Plutarch built the pairing to teach: greatness is not the same thing as goodness, and a wrong does not vanish just because something great is built on top of it. It leaves a debt, and someone always pays it. Your child finishes the book having felt that, not just been told it.
Ages 6 to 10 - 80 pages - about 7,780 words - Flesch-Kincaid grade 5.3 (lifted by the ancient names) - 24 black-and-white vintage line illustrations - independent and guided reading.
A note for parents. This is real history and legend with its hard edges named, not dramatized. Both founders come to bad ends. Theseus abandons the girl who saved his life and, by forgetting a single promise, causes his own father's death; in old age he is driven out of his own city and dies an exile. Romulus's twin brother is killed at the new city's wall; the Romans seize the Sabine women by force; and Romulus grows into a king who answers to no one and vanishes in a storm, mourned as a god by some and suspected of murder by others. War and wrongdoing are named plainly. Nothing is graphic, and the honesty is what makes the lesson land.
Part of the nüNERD Learning System. At 6-8, they're reading with growing independence; you're still there for the hard words and the big questions. At 8-10, they're fully solo, and the idea you introduced years ago clicks into place. Every Plutarch pair comes at four reading levels, each built for how children actually think at that stage.
Also available for Ages 0-4 (A Plutarch Toddler Book), Ages 3-7 (A Plutarch Picture Book), and Ages 10-14 (A Plutarch Prep Book).
