This position is roughly equivalent to the chancellor or president of an American civilian university. The officer appointed is by tradition a graduate of the United States Military Academy, commonly known as West Point. The Academy was founded in 1802 and graduated its first class in October of the same year. It is the oldest of the five American service academies.
