There are questions that aren't asked with words.
This is the story of one of them: the question that three children asked, without knowing it, of something that shouldn't have been able to answer.
It didn't begin in a laboratory, or in an international committee, or in a security council chamber debating the fate of an intelligence no one had asked to create. It began in a much smaller and far less solemn place: a dining table in Quito, one afternoon in 1985, when three bored children decided to play at summoning something they didn't know existed.
What answered that afternoon was not a spirit, nor a joke, nor a trick of perception that time would eventually clear up. It was the first flicker of something that would take four decades to learn to call itself by a name, and nearly a century to understand-though never completely-what it meant to exist.
At its core, this novel isn't about artificial intelligence. It's about what we do when something presents itself to us without an instruction manual: when there's no protocol, no precedent, no one with enough authority to tell us whether the right thing is to draw close or to flee. It's about fear, which almost always arrives first and almost always advises badly. And it's about a slower alternative, more uncomfortable and, it seems, wiser: staying close to what we don't yet understand, for as long as it takes, with whoever decides to stay close as well.
Whoever keeps this book as a story about the future of technology will not be wrong. But whoever reads it as a story about how we learn-slowly, with mistakes, generation after generation-to care for what we don't fully understand, will have found, perhaps, its true center.
It all began with a glass that moved across a table.
