Este libro propone una nueva frontera del conocimiento:
la IngenierÃa Cognitiva.
Una disciplina dedicada a estudiar los principios universales que permiten diseñar arquitecturas capaces de representar el mundo, modificar sus conocimientos con la experiencia, mantener su identidad y actuar de manera autónoma.
La inteligencia artificial actual ha creado sistemas extraordinarios, pero todavÃa carecemos de una ciencia del diseño cognitivo. Hemos construido algoritmos, redes neuronales y modelos computacionales, pero aún no comprendemos completamente cuáles son las condiciones necesarias para que una organización fÃsica pueda convertirse en una mente.
Este libro parte de una hipótesis fundamental:
si la cognición depende de la organización y no exclusivamente del material que la soporta, entonces deberÃan existir principios universales para diseñar arquitecturas cognitivas, independientemente del sustrato donde sean implementadas.
No es un manual para programar inteligencia artificial. Tampoco es un tratado sobre neurociencia. Es una exploración de los fundamentos de una disciplina emergente: una ingenierÃa dedicada a comprender cómo organizar la materia para que pueda representar, aprender y actuar.
Las ideas desarrolladas aquà continúan el camino iniciado en Más Allá del Carbono y El Espacio de las Mentes Posibles, transformando una pregunta filosófica en un problema de ingenierÃa:
Cómo diseñarÃa un ingeniero una mente si no pudiera copiar un cerebro?
IngenierÃa Cognitiva es una invitación a explorar la próxima frontera tecnológica: no solamente construir máquinas más poderosas, sino descubrir los principios necesarios para diseñar nuevas formas de inteligencia.
