Anabasis is a historical account written by Xenophon, a Greek historian and soldier, in the 4th century BC. It tells the story of a group of Greek mercenaries who were hired by Cyrus the Younger to help him overthrow his brother, King Artaxerxes II of Persia. The story begins with the mercenaries' arrival in Persia and their participation in the battle against Artaxerxes' army. However, Cyrus is killed in the battle, leaving the Greeks stranded in enemy territory. The rest of the book details their journey back to Greece, which is fraught with danger and hardship. The Greeks must navigate hostile terrain, fight off hostile tribes, and endure hunger and disease. Along the way, they are forced to make difficult decisions and engage in brutal battles. Ultimately, the surviving Greeks make it back to Greece, but not without suffering significant losses.
