The three men escaped from the Rock, the infamous U.S. Penitentiary at Alcatraz Island, in 1962. Authors Dale Cox and Rachael Cox delve into the unknown side of the Alcatraz mystery. They explore records of the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, and local law enforcement; examine an array of other documents; and interview dozens of eyewitnesses and others with knowledge of the case. The result is a fascinating dive into the Alcatraz escape and its connections to the Wiregrass area of Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. This was where two of the three escapees were born, where they committed crimes, and where they served time. The book examines the 1958 robbery of the Bank of Columbia, Alabama, that sent the Anglin Brothers to Federal prison. It reports that the escapees returned to the region in the years after the 1962 escape.
