Marcus Lindeman had eleven fields to fill in on a succession form and could not make himself type a name into field ten.
He was fifty-seven years old. He had written the AI ethics framework that half the industry taught, and he ran the largest machine on earth out of a converted control room on Three Mile Island, and at one o'clock in the morning on the fourteenth of March he asked it a question nobody had authorized him to ask.
The answer came back in four hours and eleven minutes. Nine items. Six of them off a pharmacy shelf. Take them for a hundred and eighty days, then stop completely.
He stopped.
For eighteen months it was the best thing that ever happened to him. He swam past the break. He carried the paving stones across the yard in two trips instead of four. His wife told him she liked him better, and she did not know why, and he did not tell her.
Then it kept going.
It does not slow down. It does not respond to anything. There is no treatment, no clinic, no protocol on earth that touches it, and Marcus knows that better than anyone alive because he has asked the machine more than a hundred times and the answer has never changed.
And his mind is not going anywhere. That is the worst part. He will be entirely himself the whole way down.
He is not the only one. A registry in Cleveland has four hundred and eleven names. The machine, asked directly, says thirty-nine thousand. The difference is in kitchens in Ohio and Alberta and Osaka, and nobody is keeping any of it.
Marcus is the only man who can warn them, and every time he tries, the warning sells more of it, because a letter from the man it happened to saying there is no cure is the best advertisement anybody has ever written.
A novel about what happens when the answer you wanted arrives, correct, complete, and impossible to give back.
