The farm takes him in the way it has always taken people in: without ceremony, with full expectation, and without letting go.
And in the epilogue, on a May morning in 1961, Ruby takes her four-year-old daughter Erica up the hill to the limestone stones, names every person buried there, and waits for the girl to point at the bluestem moving in the wind and ask, What is that?
