What happens when a school is on the brink of closing-and one school leader decides not to give up?
When Claudia Ynés Viza RodrÃguez chose to lead a public primary school with just ten students and three teachers, most people thought she was making a mistake. The school had lost families' trust, its enrollment had collapsed, and its future seemed almost decided.
But Claudia chose to begin where others had already seen the end.
Against All Odds is the true story of how a struggling public school in Peru was brought back to life-not through a miracle, but through persistence, community engagement, committed teachers, and a leadership approach grounded in trust.
Instead of waiting for families to return, Claudia and her team went out to find them. They knocked on doors, listened to parents, built alliances, worked with local authorities, reconnected with former students, and gradually rebuilt the school's relationship with its community.
The results were remarkable:
10 students became 75.
75 became 97.
97 became 125.
And eventually, 152 students.
But the numbers tell only part of the story.
The school regained its identity. Families began recommending it to others. Students participated in-and won-competitions. Former students returned to help. The community began to feel proud of its school again.
In the final chapter, Claudia reflects on what those years taught her about educational leadership: listening before acting, building trust, creating strong teams, involving families, facing fear, and turning small actions into lasting transformation.
This is not a theoretical leadership manual.
It is the story of a real school, a real community, and a leader who decided that giving up was not the only possible ending.
