Recognising the needs of their growing community, local residents established Penge Chapel, creating a place of worship that would later become the foundation of a remarkable educational institution.
In A School for Penge Revisited, Graham Reeves traces the fascinating evolution of the school alongside the development of Penge itself. Drawing on an extraordinary collection of logbooks, registers, minute books and other archival records-carefully preserved over generations-he reveals how the school adapted to changing times, responding to population growth, educational reforms, staffing challenges, inspections, and an increasing understanding of children's learning and welfare.
Enriched by the memories of former pupils, staff and members of the local community, this engaging history brings to life the people who taught and learned within the school's various departments, including the Boys', Girls', Higher Grade and Infants' schools. Their stories illuminate more than a century of educational and social change.
Now united as St John's Church of England Primary School, the school remains at the heart of the community it has served for generations.
