Four Mothers is a reflective literary memoir-style work about the four women who shaped one man's life in different ways: his mother, his sister, his primary school teacher, and the mother of his children. Moving from the Douro region of northern Portugal to London, family life, fatherhood, separation and gratitude, the book explores how motherhood can exist through blood, care, education and responsibility.
It is a dedication, a celebration and an act of gratitude to the women who helped form the man he became.
Linda, his mother, gave him life, survival, discipline, protection and fierce honesty. Fernanda, his sister, gave him early care, childhood safety, affection and the tenderness of sibling motherhood. Dona Margarida, his primary school teacher, gave him reading, writing, education, confidence and the first doorway into language. Akira, the mother of his children, helped shape his manhood and fatherhood through family, responsibility, commitment, co-parenting and the difficult maturity that follows love, change and separation.
Four Mothers is a reflective work about gratitude, memory, womanhood, care, education, parenthood and the invisible forces that make a person who he becomes. It is not a book of accusation, but a dedication and celebration of four imperfect, human, unforgettable women whose presence changed one man forever.
