This book is meant to be a guide to the 34 SWARM system we use, but it will be something all defensive systems can use, as it will break down how to organize a system and practice. The hope is that this book provides some new knowledge or reminds you of some tips and tricks to improve as a defensive coach.
Defensive football is becoming increasingly difficult to teach as the rules seem slanted to the other side of the ball, and often, the culture of a program must be solid for the best athletes to want to play on the defensive side of the ball. This book will help you in the X's and O's and in the organizational side, but don't forget the number one goal of every defensive coordinator should be getting the players to SWARM to the ball and play hard. Try not to overcomplicate the defense and focus on getting great effort.
Versatility is needed in today's game; its simplicity helps us install it quickly. If we have a more experienced team, we can install more, and if we are playing with a younger group, we can still create the illusion of a complex defense with a few simple calls.
This is the second book in this series. The first book was the basic overview of the 34 Fit and Swarm. This book will focus on how to organize your practices, installation, and more.
We went 5-6 in my first year as HC running a 425 Defense and gave up an unimaginable number of yards and points per game. Fast forward to year 2, and we switched to the 34 Swarm. We went 12-1, had 4 shutout victories, broke numerous school records, gave up 10 ppg and finished the year ranked in the top 8 in our classification in Pennsylvania. I'm 100% a believer in Coach Simpson's system on both sides of the ball!
