They are full of other people's stories and short on anything you can actually do. Several turn out to be religious books that were not sold as religious books. And nearly all of them decide early on that somebody here is the problem - either your son's wife, who gets diagnosed, or you, who get a list of the ways you are sabotaging your own family.
This book does none of that. It is secular, it takes nobody's side, and it does not type either of you. It assumes you are an ordinary woman who raised a son, likes him very much, and now has to work out how to be close to a man who belongs to a household you do not run.
One hundred concrete actions. Each one ends with a single thing to do today.- Visits, invitations and the front door - when to come, how long to stay, and when to go home
- Talking to your son without putting him between two women
- Building a relationship with her that does not go through him
- Advice, opinions, and the sentences that cost the most
- Grandchildren - her rules, your house, the photographs, and the other grandmother
- Christmas, weddings and the days everybody dreads in advance
- Repair after a row, without grovelling and without a campaign
- The feelings nobody lets you say out loud, and what to do with them
- Building a week of your own, which is the part nobody else has to agree to
No scripture. No personality types. No villain. Nothing here diagnoses your daughter-in-law, and nothing here tells you that you are the one who needs fixing. Where a tip asks something of you, it is because your own conduct is the only part of this you control.
It will not tell you that you have lost him. Chapter one says so plainly, in the sixth tip, rather than at the end of the book. What you have lost is the daily version of him, and there is a chapter on where the rest of your week comes from instead.
It also stays out of the courts. Grandparents' rights and contact law appear nowhere, deliberately - a family difficulty that becomes a legal one is far harder to repair afterwards.
Written for a mother who is still in contact, even if the visits are shorter than they were and the phone calls are harder. Every chapter says at the start who it is for and which tips to skip, because roughly a fifth of them will not be yours - and that is how a handbook is meant to work.
If what you want is not another account of somebody else's family but a plain list of things you could do this week, this is that book.
