A soldier comes home from a year at war. He's still on active duty. He still has to pass fitness tests. The nearest free military gym is an hour away--so he pays about $80 a month for the one he can walk to. He is defending this country, and paying for the privilege of staying fit enough to do it.
Why is there a bill at all?
That single question opens a bigger one. Because here's what almost no one knows: America already fixed this--for a lucky few. Since 2008, the government has quietly paid gyms to give some service members free, attendance-based fitness access. And we do the same thing for civilians at massive scale--more than 13 million seniors get gym access paid for by their insurers, and have since 1992. The model exists. It works. We just drew the line too small, and left veterans, retirees, and nearly everyone else standing outside it.
This book makes the honest case for redrawing that line--starting with the people who served, and asking whether the rest of us belong on the inside too. It proposes a simple, testable idea (the American Activity Card), runs the actual numbers, answers its own toughest critics head-on, and never once pretends the answer is easy.
It's not free gyms for everyone. It's a targeted, accountable, cancelable experiment--and a question this country has been too busy to ask out loud.
You served. Maybe the first thing you hear shouldn't be a price.
