The observation is not the mechanism.
A diagnosis can accurately describe a pattern without explaining why it exists. A crime can describe an outcome without revealing the internal process that produced it. A correlation can be completely real while the explanation attached to it is wrong. Two political systems can appear ideologically opposite while depending on remarkably similar underlying human mechanisms.
