Photographer Elizabeth Ward has built a career documenting what remains after people leave-abandoned buildings, forgotten roads, vanished towns, and the traces history refuses to surrender.
A handful of old photographs brings her to Hardin County, Iowa, where a dark shape has appeared above the courthouse across generations. With the help of Daniel Mercer, a county roads worker whose knowledge of the land runs deeper than any map, and Marian Keller, a local historian guarding more than county records, Elizabeth begins separating folklore from evidence-and memory from truth.
But the deeper she searches Hardin County's past, the more unsettling the investigation becomes.
Because some of the missing history may belong to Elizabeth herself.
