When young Elise Audley falls gravely ill, her parents are devastated to learn from the family doctor that she may not recover. Exhaustion and fear settle over the household, and hope begins to slip through their fingers. In the midst of this despair, Mrs. Audley recalls a strange tale once told by Magaret, their quiet maid from Africa who tended both the gardens and the household's forgotten corners. Magaret had spoken of an ancient spirit, one who could heal any sickness, but only at a cost. She had sworn the story was true. At first, Mrs. Audley dismissed it as folklore. But as Elise's condition worsens, desperation eclipses reason. With her husband torn between fear and disbelief, she seeks out Magaret in secret and begs her to summon the being she once described. Bound by loyalty and troubled by what she knows, Magaret reluctantly agrees. The ritual is performed in the dead of night, and the spirit answers. Its presence is unsettling, its power undeniable. It grants the mother's plea and restores Elise to perfect health, an impossible miracle that leaves the household trembling with relief. But the spirit's gift is not free.
