The friends live in Mincebury, a wind-brushed coastal town where gulls circle over crooked rooftops and the smell of saltwater mixes with warm bread from the old shops. Its narrow streets are lined with ramshackle storefronts selling fresh loaves, produce, eggs, and other market goods, but the most beloved stop is Dunfrid's Dumplings, where every dumpling tastes like a warm hug after a long day. Just up the coastline lies Hairy Toad Hollow, a place that can only be reached by boat because the dangerous Bicklebury Bog separates it from Mincebury. To get there, the friends board Captain Ebb Driftmoor's sloop, the Misty-eyed Maiden, and sail through fog, waves, and whispered sea tales. Captain Driftmoor always has a spooky story to tell or a shanty to sing, including rumors of a man who casts no shadow and a cursed crewman named Cursed-eyed Bligh. When the moon is full, Bligh is said to turn into a beast with ghostly white eyes, fingers stretching long and sinuous like seaweed, and a growl that ripples through the fog. After each adventurous boat ride, the friends reach the enchanted Hairy Toad Hollow, the largest marketplace in all the lands, where three-story ramshackle shops overflow with strange treasures, tempting treats, and unexpected wonders. For a short while, the adventurous marketplace offers them a joyful escape from the heavy responsibilities placed upon them.
Their story is steeped in ancient legends. At the heart of Elwindwire stands the Ursalym Tree, its vast branches glittering with thousands of star-like lights, yet in times of great trouble its glow begins to fade into darkness. Every five years, the Wyrm's Eye moon rises over the land, a strange and ominous sign tied to an evil entity that was once cast into the moon itself. Though most of its power was imprisoned there, a fragment of its darkness still lingers loose in the world, still spreading fear and corruption, the man with no shadow. Beyond the safer paths lies the Dark Forest of Olgenore, where primordial, chaotic magic was long ago bound to prevent it from consuming the land. Deeper still stands the Forbidden Temple of Golsolimort, a once-sacred place now twisted by evil. Together, these legends shape the dangers the friends must face and reveal that their journey is part of a much older battle between light and darkness.
