Noch bis in das 19. Jahrhundert hinein wurde die Philosophie als Weltweisheit bezeichnet, und noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten war häufig unklar, ob Philosophie mit Weltanschauung oder Weltanschauungslehre zusammenfällt. Die Untersuchung 'Welt' als Thema der Philosophie zeichnet eine Entwicklung von der Fixierung des Ausdrucks 'Welt' in der Philosophie Christian Wolffs bis zu den Entwürfen der ersten beiden Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts nach. Es wird gezeigt, wie es nach der Kantischen Umformulierung des Weltproblems schlie lich im 19. Jahrhundert zu einer 'Explosion' der Fragestellung kommt, die mit den klassischen Kategorien der Philosophie nur noch schwer zu fassen ist. Husserls Philosophie wird in diesem Kontext als vorläufiger Endpunkt einer ausufernden Entwicklung wie deren Sanierung gedeutet.
