We are the Mods: The Story of a Generation That Refused to Be Ordinary
They were the children of bomb sites and utility furniture, born into a country that had survived the war but never quite recovered from it. Their parents demanded quiet and gratitude. They offered neither. Instead, they spent their wages on Italian cloth and American records, on the cut of a lapel and the pulse of a bassline, and in doing so they built something that no one who lived through it has ever entirely left behind.
We are the Mods is the definitive cultural history of one of Britain's most extraordinary youth movements, tracing its full arc from the jazz-lit coffee bars of the 1950s through the peak years of the mid-1960s, the skinhead divergence, the Northern Soul underground, the electric 1979 revival, Britpop, and into the twenty-first century gatherings where the rooms still fill and the music still plays. David G. Oldham brings to this story both the authority of deep research and the honesty of a writer who understands that the things we love must be capable of bearing scrutiny.
This is not a hagiography. We are the Mods holds simultaneously the culture's genuine achievements and its significant moral failures. The Mod movement built a sophisticated working-class aesthetic out of nothing but taste and determination, yet it appropriated Black American and Caribbean music with a debt it rarely acknowledged. It created spaces of astonishing vitality for young people, yet marginalised the women without whom it could not have existed. It began in the dream of meritocracy and ended, for some, in the violence of the far right. Oldham examines all of it, unflinchingly and without prurience, because the only history worth reading is one that tells the truth.
Entire chapters are devoted to the overlooked dimensions of the story: the female Mods who shaped the look and kept the faith; the Black music foundations that made everything else possible; the myths and the memories that both preserve and distort. The writing is literary, warm, and precise, combining the narrative momentum of the best popular history with the analytical seriousness of subcultural studies at its most rigorous.
At its heart, We are the Mods is a meditation on something permanent. The Mod impulse was never only about fashion or music. It was a refusal, a conviction that ordinary life deserves more attention than it typically receives, that beauty and distinction are not luxuries reserved for those born to them, and that belonging to something larger than yourself, something made of shared taste and shared feeling, is one of the most serious things a person can do. That conviction has not aged. The pursuit continues.
Readers who have carried their own version of this story, through the scooter runs and the all-nighters, through the record shops and the tailors, through the revivals and the reunions, will find here not nostalgia but recognition. And readers coming to this world for the first time will find one of the most compelling arguments ever made for why subcultures matter, how they survive, and what they cost.
Essential reading for fans of Jon Savage's England's Dreaming, Simon Reynolds's Rip It Up and Start Again, and anyone who has ever used style, music, or belonging to say: I am more than what I was born into.
