I have attended church all my life and studied for a time at Ashland Seminary and served as a Chaplain. I have travelled to the poorest, remotest parts of Ghana and Guatemala to build houses and teach school because I followed God there. But I, like the majority of people in the world, never really believed Jesus was God in the Flesh. Now, that system of belief works for many people, and leads many of them into a life of service and care for their fellow humans and the world we find ourselves in. And that's good. However, for the rest of us, who cannot accept the full divinity of Jesus, I firmly believe we can still see and love Jesus as a teacher (and brother) who was so in tune with his Father God, that he points us, too, into having a relationship with that God. Jesus' Father - that loving, somewhat mysterious God who Jesus was trying to make available to everyone he met. When you really get deeply into studying scripture, it is very apparent that we will not have it all correct in this lifetime, and what it actually says is a lot more complex and beautiful than a simplified path to heaven if you recite some words of belief. So, it is important to try to understand, but always with the humility that reminds us that we just can't know the whole truth. But I do know one thing from personal experience. I intimately know the God (the he/she/it/we) that Jesus knew. And He (also referred to as we in scripture) whispers hope and love to me in my darkest hours, when I am at the very end of my rope, and picks me up when I fall, and watches over my family. And I can curse him and yell at him in times of extreme distress and thank him and love him when we saves me from hopeless situations. Or just thank Him when I see a beautiful flower or I am watching my daughter at play. And this book is an attempt to share how that can be so. And how I (and you) can still be welcomed into His Church. And how you can, and may already, know the loving God Jesus was trying to show everyone. I believe He wants to let you know He knows you too.

This book is for the rest of us, and especially for everyone who has had a hard go of it in life. (Sooner or later, that is all of pretty much all of us.) I believe that God redeems our suffering so that we are uniquely equipped by our misfortunes to go out and help others who find themselves where we have been. This helps us as much as them. This is how Grace travels. Jesus knew this. He wanted us to know it too.
