At Leviathan Intelligence Agency in Sarasota, Ryder receives a call from Macy Hollis, a young woman far from the future she once imagined. Macy does not ask Ryder whether Wade is a good man.
She wants facts.
A straightforward background investigation exposes a relationship built on contradictions. Ryder finds lies about employment, money, other women, access to Macy's accounts, and decisions she once believed were entirely her own. Wade seems to know where Macy is, who she speaks with, and when she works. He uses her car, depends on her income, and always has another explanation ready.
Yet Ryder refuses to confuse bad character with proof of a specific crime.
Wade can be dishonest without every accusation against him being true. He can be manipulative without every unanswered question having the darkest possible answer. Macy's incomplete memories cannot simply be filled with whatever explanation seems most likely.
Ryder's job is not to manufacture certainty.
It's to determine what can be established.
As the investigation expands, Macy begins questioning assumptions she has lived with for months. Her father arrives from Kansas to protect her. Police, attorneys, witnesses, digital records, surveillance footage, financial evidence, and a courtroom transform the case into something far larger.
Ryder is caught between competing versions of the same events.
One side sees an obvious predator.
Another sees a deeply flawed man being blamed because everyone dislikes him.
Macy is caught between them, trying to separate what she remembers from what she was told, what she chose from what she was pressured to accept, and what the evidence can actually prove.
Then the case appears to reach its answer.
Until one piece of evidence does not fit.
A time.
A photograph.
A person who should not have been where the records place him.
Ryder has built his career on the principle that inconvenient facts do not become less true because they threaten a conclusion everyone has accepted. When new evidence begins challenging the established timeline, he is forced to examine not only Wade Dobbins but the investigation itself.
The question changes.
It's no longer simply whether a guilty man can convince people he is innocent.
It becomes whether investigators, witnesses, attorneys, and courts can reach a reasonable conclusion-and still be wrong about something that matters.
