Genetically engineered monsters stalk a primitive landscape littered with the wreckage of past civilization. Humanity survives by never stepping foot on solid ground. This is a world of hydrogen airships, bolt-action rifles, steam engines, and subterfuge - of blistering air combat where a single bullet can incinerate an entire crew. In this world, airmen unflinchingly accept one of two inevitable deaths: the fire or the fall.
It's a world that should chew Irving up and spit him out without a second thought, but he's spared by an unlikely ally. Quick-witted force-of-nature Marie Beck, the overconfident daughter of a passing airship captain, has her own reasons for keeping Irving alive. She offers aid but is determined to drag him along on a quest to save her people. It's far too late to turn back when Irving finally discovers that her promise of assistance comes with a hefty dose of half-truths, clever tricks, and outright lies.
When Armstead's invasion boils through the rift, cultures and technologies clash in spectacular fashion. As airships deal death in the sky and monsters rage on the ground, it will take nothing less than a miracle for Irving to set aside his fears, summon what little courage he has, and embrace the dangerous rules of this strange new world: win, surrender, or die.
