Ben and Jenny Taylor go on trip to her parents' house in Newton South Carolina. Jenny and Ben are having problems in their marriage and are going to separate for a while to sort things out. Their trip is interrupted by supernatural events, and they find themselves in the dark blue woods. A place where people end up that committed crimes and were evil and mean to others. They are brought here by the Woodman. The Woodman is the ruler of the dark blue, north and white woods. The more people who have committed crimes or gotten into trouble otherwise, make the size of the Woodman's woods grow. They must complete certain tasks the Woodman assigns to them and be successful in completing their tasks, if not they become a permanent fixture in the Woodman's woods. When they start their tasks, they find themselves in all kinds of predicaments.
