What does freedom mean if the choices that define your life remain beyond your reach?
In WOKE: An African American Couple's Search for Freedom - Introducing Meaningful Choice Theory, Deterrance Hampton begins with a deeply personal question. With their children grown, he and his wife consider the next chapter of their lives and confront a possibility that should be simple: if they could choose freely, where would they live?
That question leads them from their own experience into a much larger examination of American freedom.
Drawing on history, philosophy, law, and the Black American experience, Hampton traces the idea of freedom from America's founding principles through slavery, emancipation, segregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and the present day. Along the way, he places influential philosophers and Black thinkers into conversation with one central question: Is freedom merely the permission to choose-or must a choice also be realistically available for freedom to be meaningful?
From that question emerges Meaningful Choice Theory: the argument that freedom should be evaluated not only by the rights a person possesses on paper, but by whether that person has a genuine ability to choose among meaningful alternatives.
WOKE ultimately puts that idea to the test, examining the historical loss of choice experienced by Black Americans, the economic realities surrounding relocation, and a proposed framework for restoring meaningful choice without dictating what anyone must choose.
This is not a book telling Black Americans to leave America.
It is not a book telling them to stay.
It asks something more fundamental:
What would freedom look like if the choice were truly yours?
