Sir Winston S. Churchill is the only man in the world to have an international society named after him in the U.S. and most Commonwealth Nations. But he was far more than the man who won WWII. He was also a painter of about 550 paintings, wrote 43 books that filled 72 volumes, and was a politician, husband, diplomat, and statesman, perhaps the greatest man of the 20th century, that he helped define.
In the 60 years since his death, some criticism has been levelled at him, such as his intense hatred of Indians, Muslims, and Blacks, which was extreme even by Victorian standards. Yet he was also a man who stood up for the Jews during the Holocaust and the creation of Israel in 1948. In short, for everything he was right about, like being anti-appeasement in the 1930s or warning against Stalin in his 1946 Iron Curtain speech, he was also wrong on many things, like opposing the Suffragettes, Irish Home Rule and Independence in India.
Yet for all of his political successes and failures, there was a side of Churchill that made him a great historian. Indeed, his whole life, from a soldier of Queen Victoria to the man Harry S. Truman called that great world citizen, would be chronicled by his own writings. For as he said, history will be kind to me for I intend to write it. This was certainly the case in his own finest hour of WWII when he led the free world against the Nazis to defeat their tyranny.
There was also an eccentric side to him, such as his fondness for dogs, pigs, and horses. He slept an average of four hours a day and put himself into danger during air raids. He was either manically hyperactive or collapsed in paralyzing gloom.
