From America's smartest TV girl to California's fiercest political trailblazer.
You know what it feels like to be told you are too much. Too smart, too ambitious, too different. You have watched doors close because of who you are, not what you can do. You have wondered whether living authentically and making a real difference in the world could ever coexist. Sheila James Kuehl wondered the same thing, and And Then What Happened?: My Life From Zelda to Politics is her extraordinary answer.
Beginning as a child actor at age eight in the wild early days of radio and television, Kuehl became iconic as Zelda Gilroy, the irrepressible, brilliant girl on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. When suspicion about her sexual orientation ended that career, she refused to disappear. Instead, she reinvented herself again and again: as a UCLA administrator navigating campus revolution, a Harvard Law graduate, a feminist attorney, a law professor, and ultimately a history-making politician. She became the first openly gay or lesbian member of the California State Legislature and later helped govern Los Angeles County and its 10 million residents through some of the most turbulent years in modern memory.
Inside these pages, you will discover:
- How a family forged by immigration, faith, and improbable love shaped one woman's lifelong resilience
- What it takes to rebuild a life when the world punishes you for being yourself
- Why saying yes to unexpected doors can transform not just your own story, but the lives of millions
Optimistic, witty, and unflinching, this is a memoir about the courage it takes to keep becoming.
